I grew up on family run cattle properties in northern Queensland. With the exception of one year at boarding school, my education was correspondence. Even then I attempted to write stories and poems. Due to my father’s ill health I became ‘head stockman’ at a very young age. I bred and broke in ponies. Sometimes I took in horses for other people. We got involved with picnic races and I rode in one of the first amateur ladies races.
